What is earthquake?
An earthquake is a phenomenon that involves violent shaking of the ground and severe shaking of the ground and structures above it. This happens due to the release of pressure transmitted by moving lithospheric or crustal plates. The Earth’s crust is divided into 7 large plates, which are 50 miles thick, which are constantly moving at a slow speed in the Earth’s interior and on top of many smaller plates. Earthquakes are basically tectonic, that is, moving plates are responsible for causing tremors in the ground. The occurrence of an earthquake in a populated area can result in many casualties and injuries, as well as huge damage to property.

Danger of earthquake in India:
During the last 15 years, the country has suffered 10 major earthquakes that have resulted in the loss of more than 20,000 lives. According to the current seismic zone map of the country (IS 1893:2002), 59% of India’s land area is under moderate to severe seismic hazard alert:- which means that India is prone to earthquakes of MSK intensity VII and above. remains (BMTPC, 2006). In fact the entire Himalayan region is known to be prone to major earthquakes of magnitude 8.0 and in a relatively short period of 50 years there have been 4 such major earthquakes: 1897 Shillong (magnitude 8.7); Kangra in 1905 (intensity 8.0); 1934 Bihar-Nepal (intensity 8.3); and 1950 Assam-Tibet (intensity 8.6). Scientific publications have warned about the possibility of a large powerful earthquake occurring in the Himalayan region, which could adversely affect the lives of millions of people in India.
